Given current economic conditions, bankruptcy has become a topic of increased Congressional attention. This collection of five Congressional Research Reports examines current pressures on Congress and legislative efforts to change the Bankruptcy Code. The distressed economy has affected state and local governments as well as individuals and businesses, leading to increased bankruptcy filings. In 2009, there were more filings by municipalities under chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code than in 2007 and 2008 combined. Increases in consumer and business bankruptcy filings were not as dramatic, but were not without significance.
